Abbie Price discovers there’s more to her favourite scent

You know that gorgeous fresh, earthy smell after rain? There’s a name for it; petrichor. This scent always been a favourite of mine. Stepping outside after a downpour, it’s almost instinctive to breathe in deep. It’s almost like the rain washes the earth and after its shower it smells clean, fresh, like a new day. A reset.

A little digging tells me a bit of the science of this smell. Something to do with the mix of the rain, the bacteria in the soil and plants, and even the lightning of a storm contribute to this smell. Humans are remarkably sensitive to this smell, and can detect it even diluted, almost like we can tune into it.

With Spring on its way, a reset could be a good thing. And living in this lush land means lots of rain, so lots of chance for petrichor.
