The science of scent
Did you know that scent is the first sense that we develop in the womb? So, before we could see, hear or feel, we could smell.
It’s why a mother’s scent is so comforting to a baby and why a baby can nose its way up to its mother’s chest just by following the smell of milk.
“Smell and emotion are stored as one memory… childhood tends to be the period in which you create ‘the basis for smells you will like and hate for the rest of your life.’”
― Dawn Goldworm, The Harvard Gazette.
How incredible is it that small and emotion are stored as one memory? This explains why scent has such a powerful effect on our mood and emotions and why it’s so important to surround ourselves with the right scents.
“Odours have a power of persuasion stronger than that of words, appearances, emotions, or will. The persuasive power of an odour cannot be fended off, it enters into us like breath into our lungs, it fills us up, imbues us totally. There is no remedy for it.”
― Patrick Süskind, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Aromatherapy
People usually have a strong association with the idea of Aromatherapy, whether good or bad. It might be the spray your Yoga teacher uses or the herbal balm you use for muscle ache. Or, it could be a stinky shop you always steer clear of on the high street. The truth is, the term Aromatherapy is applied far and wide but here at Great House Farm Stores we have a very particular use for it. Namely, we harness Aromatherapeutic principles (handed down to us from our mother) to create original candle recipes that can affect, shift and stimulate you.
“Aromatherapy is a caring, hands-on therapy which seeks to induce relaxation, to increase energy, to reduce the effects of stress and to restore lost balance to mind, body and soul.”
― Robert Tisserand
“Aromatherapy conveys the concept of healing with aromatic substances.”
― Robert Tisserand
We take the known principles of different natural oils and extracts and build our candle recipes around them. Most of you will know the hero ingredients like Lavender and how it can help aid sleep. But did you know that there are scents that will energise you, that will calm you down, that will help clear your mind?
Home Scent Practice
We believe that there’s a candle for every moment and while burning smells that you love is important, it’s also important to know the impact the smell you burn could be having on how you feel.
That’s why we invented Home Scent Practice - the considered curation of the smells you surround yourself with.
Knowing which candle to light when you’re feeling sluggish and need energising, or stressed and you need calming, is a very quiet but real form of superpower.
